hugh ‘redman’ james is one of the greatest jamaican music producers of the late 1980s. raised in a musical household in the west kingston slum of hannah town, with his mother a sound system selector, redman gained his initial schooling in the music business from none other than king tubby, the legendary sound system owner and dub mixer that was responsible for voicing and mixing some of the greatest reggae of all time. after being immersed in sound system culture during his youth in the 1960s and 70s, redman began sitting in on sessions at king tubby’s studio, but migrated to hartford, connecticut in 1978 in search of steady employment. returning to jamaica a few years later, he established a popular sound system in kingston and began producing music with king tubby’s assistance in 1985, working with the roots radics during a time of great uncertainty in jamaican music, as the new dancehall style came to prominence, early work featured gregory isaacs, sugar minott and frankie paul, as well as rising stars such as little john and horace martin. then, following the computerisation of dancehall, redman began producing some of the most popular music of the day, crafting durable and complex rhythms with a broad team of players that included steely and clevie, augmented by members of the browne bunch and other players. redman helped establish a number of total unknowns in this era, including carl meeks, dave bailey and wayne palmer, and became a serious contender for king jammy’s crown. but the producer was ultimately frustrated by the dramatic changes to sweep jamaican music in the early 1990s, and subsequently retreated from the music industry redman international dancehall 1985-1989 compiles the best work from his glory days, with half of the twelve vocal tracks coming complete with corresponding dub versions.

nice price deal !!! born near the french border and growing up in the 90’s, dirk lamprecht aka dml developed a strange but even more so strong interest in hardcore-techno. but this style quickly became too limited for him and he adopted the sound of detroit, carl craig, kenny larkin and robert hood became the most influencial artists for him. over the years he became affiliated with an even greater spectrum of musical influences, ranging from all sorts of electronic music to jazz and even world music. in addition he graduated as an audio engineer and started to perform as a live act in 2002. more knowledge consequently leads to a much more diverse way of producing own tracks. in 2007 dirk lamprecht made his debut under his alias >dml< on the legendary label harthouse. his productions range from tribalistic via hypnotic, with a hint of detroit under his real name and from a touch of minimal, through melodramatic to straight techno under his alias dml

breaking his silence after twenty years, sebastian snoeck a.k.a sebastian s. will be the second member of belgian collective “bwp experiments” to release on the basic moves imprint. he has handed over two previously unpublished tracks made under the moniker caustic 14. after listening to “personal space invader” in 1997, carl craig asked sebastian s. to produce new material for his own label, planet e. “message in a box” and “rising star” were therefore made as a response to this request. however, due to a political transatlantic rift the tracks never saw the light of day and have since been stored on dat tapes, hidden away from the general public’s ears. if i had to describe sebastian’s output, i’d say it is most importantly energetic, positive, and groovy. it bears the mark of a certain nostalgia, shying away from the blind celebration of both futurism and experimentation in order to reach intemporality. this attempt to exist outside of time gives his productions a certain character and in my opinion his music has come to embody something i like to call “space opera techno”. sebastian s has succeeded where many before him have failed: by avoiding copycat tactics and simplified approaches to production he managed to create a singular identity. the tracks are recognisable after the first few seconds – and that’s what makes his work so unique!

giant records 10th release is from new york born adam collins and limited to 150 hand stamped and numbered copies. adam is widely known for his work as one half of production duo omni am, along with marky star and counts derrick carter and evil eddie richards and a whole host of others, amongst their fans. adam’s release for giant is titled - day2day and has all the trademark’s of adam’s wonky, left of field, slightly off kilter grooves - day2day builds and snakes itself into a bottom bass heavy house jam - chicago style keys mould the snare and hats into an infectious work out - with an alien like hook that keeps it all slightly wobbly. the next cut is from the super talented carl finlow under carl’s random factor guise, a beauty in its own right ! super tight drums and a punchy random factor bassline take’s this mix on a journey through many shades of electronica - as the track swells nicely with warm atmospheric pads and sprinkles of emotive keys, with an electro style hook that keep’s it all swinging in carl’s trademark sound. the next mix is from la based producer mieka du franx. mieka’s mix strips the original down to the bare essentials and gives it a tuff minimal feel. the last mix is from echo of glory, which see’s echo take the track on a acid tinged work out - adding dubbed out vocals and super subbed out bass.

wysing polyphonic has emerged from the wysing polyphonic music festival, now in its 8th year, which has programmed the likes of beatric dillon, elaine mitchener, hannah sawtell, helena hauff, holly herndon, james holden, karen gwyer, klara lewis, nik colk void and russell haswell, amongst many others, play at the cambridgeshire centre.

soul jazz records’ new space, energy and light is a collection of music by early electronic and synthesizer pioneers (from the 1960s through the 1970s), mid-1970s proto-new age gurus and 1980s guerrilla d-i-y cassette-era electronic artists, spanning in total over a near 30-year time frame. all of these artists used electronic advancements in music technology as a means of exploring not only space and the idea of the future, but also of looking inwards to the soul and of creating music in harmony with the natural world.

primitive trust is the coming together of two experienced musical minds. in one corner is will saul of the influential aus music empire, and in the other is tom mangan, aka tee mango, the producer who started millionhands record and clothing label. the pair met many moons ago and reconnected recently at a festival in morocco. they bonded over music, lunch and shared family travails - and as they both now live in somerset decided a little local studio collaboration seemed all but essential. between them, these consumate country gentlemen have seen plenty a musical styles come and go, so decided their best route forward would be to make music to please themselves. to that end, they holed themselves up in tee mangos woodshed studio with the following ground rules: they would make music only with the gear they had (mpc 2000, ableton, roland 101, juno, fender rhodes, various fx pedals) they would trust their instincts and go with first feelings they would embrace the joy of randomness if in doubt they would ask what would carl do? with that, you have the simple but effective mo of primitive trust. these sessions have resulted in a series of three eps to be released over the course of four months. each ep will feature 2 or 3 original tracks and one fresh remix, with unique artwork and an illustration by all-around visual auteur geoff mcfetridge. using the building blocks of house, and classic techno primitive trust can do zoned out and romantic, as much as driving and heady, but with an ease that comes from experience, years in the making. while tipping their proverbial hats to the past they also look to the future with their sound, mixing samples, wigged out synthwork and propulsive rhythms to create something honest and heartfelt that will stand the test of time

nice price deal !!! titanium is back with a brandnew release! titan103 is a great ep from austrians producer christopher groove who has his first solo release on philipp straubs label titanium. this ep already had a great impact on the market as felix da housecat licenced maximal mnml for his recent global underground compilation milan which was a great success wordwide. maximal mnml is a deep techno tune with soft percussions and a great bassline that makes everybody move. the second track b.o.w. is a real techno bomb with a huge break and succeeded on many dancefloors around the globe, not only due to heavy support from carl cox. to complete the ep philipp straub asked his friend danilo vigorito for a remix and danilo delivered one of his rare and beloved tunes. danilo, who is one of the main protegees of italian techno, formed maximal mnml into a little bit darker structure with a unique atmosphere. all in all a great ep!
